- SynopsisSet in London in 1840 before the discovery of anaesthesia. Surgeon Thomas Bolton is obsessive about his research with various drugs in his quest to discover a formula for an anaesthetic for patients undergoing surgery. However, he gradually becomes addicted to the drugs with which he is experimenting and in the course of his charitable work in the Seven Dials area, he becomes enmeshed in the world of blackmail and crime. He is blackmailed into providing false death certificates for the criminals who murder unwary travellers in order to provide bodies for teaching to the surgeons of a nearby hospital. Murdered before he can successfully complete his work, it is left to his son Jonathan to achieve his father's lifelong quest for an anaesthetic drug. (Synopsis)
